Please help me with my Russian - нравственность.

One word I heard a lot in Russia this summer, and will not go away, is нравственность. Literally ‘morality’ or ‘morals’.

What; my Russian friends, does it and does it not entail? Is it essentially private (largely sexual morals?) or is it essentially public? Does it cover the area of proper behaviour in government and business life (what is commonly known in the west as ‘ethics’)? Or is it something else, bordering on the idea of ‘nobility’ (in its broad sense), ‘virtue’ or ‘public-mindedness’, including the idea of being to control one’s baser instincts?

I heard it often in the context of patriotic discourse, in conjunction with mother country (родина) and Orthodoxy, but am not sure whether this is where it really belongs.
