Job's surrender

The second reading in today’s combined Vespers + Eucharist service in the Orthodox liturgy, gives us Job’s ‘surrender’ to God, ending with the words ‘I knew you then only by hearsay; but now I have seen you with my own eyes‘. (Job 42: 5).

Words that mark a critical step in the Christian life.

It’s a pity that the text does not continue with the following verse (in the Hebrew text version): ‘I retract all that I have said, and in dust and ashes I repent’.

It is only when we hit this ‘at first hand’ God that deep and purifying penitence is possible.

(I actually missed the service: the flu (?) that knocked me out for the first week of Lent came back yesterday with a vengeance).
